Besakih - The Bali'ssupreme holy place
Bail's oldest, largest, most impressive and austere temple complex sits on the slopes of Gunung Agung. Actually consisting of tree temple compounds stretching over one kilometer, Besakih is the most important of the island's religious shrines. It is bali's supreme holy place, the essence of Bali's 50,000-odd temples, a symbol of religious unity, and the only temple that serves all Balinese. The sun-god (Bhatara Surya), the god of the sea (Ratu Waruna), and every major figure in he Balinese pantheon is represented here. Each of the island's nine regencies also maintains its own temple within the complex.
Hindu theologians claim the temple was founded by the 8th century missionary Danghyang Markandeye, a priest credited with introducing the tradition of daily offerings and the concept of a single god. The first record of Besakih's existence is a chronogram dated A.D. 1007, possibly describing the death ritual for King Udayana's queen, Mahendradatta. Beyond a great unadorned split gate, a broad terrace leads to a gapura, which opens onto 50 black, slender , pagoda like meru shrines. Long flights of stone steps lead to the main central temple, Pura Penataran Agung, which consist of six rising terraces built on slope, all connected by gateways. In the third inner court of the central temple is the sanggar agung, a beautifully decorated 17th-century triple lotus stone throne representing the divine triad. This is the ritual center of Besakih, tantamount to heaven. Through the clear, fresh air of the topmost terrace, over 900 meters above sea level, is an unsurpassed view over rice terraces. Beyond, thick white clouds hover over Gunung Agung.

Situated in a valley in the northeast corner of the village of Tampaksiring under a spectacular banyan tree, 37 kilometers northeast of Denpasar at the end of a wellsignposted road, the Tirta Empul temple and its 20 small sugar-palm thatched shrines are exquisitely decorated and lovingly maintained. Tirtagangga - The great beauty of pool complex
Fifteen kilometers northwest of Amlapura in the Karangasem regency of east Bali, the turnoff is just one-half kilometers beyond the bridge after leaving Amlapura. One of the prettiest places in all of Bali, tirtagangga ("Water of the Ganges") is a pool complex built by Raja Anak Agung Ngurah Ketut in 1947 on the site of a sacred spring that emerges from under a banyan tree.
With its shallow pools, pleasant cool weather, few mosquitoes, great beauty , quiet star-filled nights, and birds chirping over the constant sound of splashing water, Tirtagangga is perfect for relaxation. Sitting on the slopes of Gunung Agung, the open-air palace's fabled water basins, fountains , bizarre statues, and figures have been repeatedly damaged by earthquakes. Locals and the government are involved in a seemingly ceaseless restoration effort.
It's sublime experience to swim laps in the site's big flower-strewn pools filled from mountain streams. Pools are drained mornings, but completely fill again by afternoon. It costs a minimal amount to use the 45-meter long pool. The water is spine-tingling cold, so wait until noon to plunge in. After 1800 swimming is free of charge, but the water is too cold.
